Stegosaurus

Pronounced: STEG-oh-SORE-us
Means: “Roofed reptile” (referring to plates)
Time: 145 million years ago, Late Jurassic Period
SIZE: 30 feet long
PLACE: Western North America

Stegosaurus is the largest member of the plate-backed reptile group. And it had the largest plates among stegosaurs. But its size was more of a protection from predators than its sharp but thin plates. And with a brain the size of an avocado pit, Stegosaurus wasn’t about outsmart an Allosaurus.
